I was asked by the New York-based funk and soul band SUM to develop an identity. They wanted something that felt tribal, spiritual, modern and playful. Their lyrical content centers around love, self esteem and empowerment. The illustrative designs were inspired by my love for the work of the artist Aaron Douglas, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Grateful Dead's iconic skeleton illustrations. Below are a few excerpts from the first year of renderings, resulting assets, animation and packaging. It's an identity I hope to evolve alongside the band's musical development.
